Hi, my name is Michele Siamis and I am a Freshman at the University of Iowa. Going away to college in a different state, knowing very few people, was a bit scary and overwhelming. My first few weeks seemed daunting. How was I going to meet people? What would I do to keep myself busy outside of going to class and doing homework? My sister was a dancer and at 3 years old I took my first dance class, not necessarily by choice. The dancing thing didn’t last long; I made it through one recital. It was sports that I was truly passionate about. Finding a sport I was interested in wasn’t hard to do. After my parents realized dancing wasn’t going to last, I began playing basketball, softball, volleyball, swimming and any other activity that required athleticism. In high school I played golf, softball, basketball, volleyball, and track and field. Graduating high school was hard for me because I knew I would no longer be participating in the sports teams I was once a part of. The question remained: would I find this same comradery at Iowa?
Something happened that would soon change my college experience: I received an email about the first practice of Saucy Nancy’s Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. Having little idea at the time what attending this practice would lead to, I decided I would give it a go. It didn’t take long to realize that Frisbee might just be that team I was looking for. And this time, unlike the previous sports I’ve participated in, it wasn’t because I was good that I wanted to play. It was the fresh air, exercise and most importantly the amazing girls that made this team what it is.
I am currently working on getting my bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Management with a minor in Sports and Recreational Management. Outside of my classes, I’m an S.T.A.T leader which stands for Students Today and AlumniTomorrow. I help run different events around campus that spread the Hawkeye spirit both on and off campus. I also work for the Hawk Shop Distribution center. I’ve always been a firm believer that time is very precious and college is no different. Four years will go by fast and I am trying to make the most of every second I have here. I always look forward to Saucy no matter what the circumstances. Tired, stressed out, or test the next morning, I’m excited to go to practice or play in a game. Saucy Nancy has become an important part of my day where I have fun with my amazing new friends that I’m able to now call my family.
If anyone asked me if I ever saw myself playing Ultimate Frisbee, I would have said no and probably laughed. It didn’t even occur to me that this could have become such a big part of my college experience. I couldn’t see myself not being a part of this team and being able to play this sport. With playing Ultimate comes several expenses for travel, food, lodging, uniforms, and tournaments. Financial restrictions would be an upsetting reason as to why I would not be able to participate in this amazing sport. And for that reason, I’m asking for your support. Any donations are greatly appreciated. It doesn’t even have to be directly for me. I am part of this team, so a team donation is just as helpful. Thank you for listening to me, and I hope I have inspired you to sponsor me!
Thank you
