Hello, my name is Anya Kim! I’m a second year here at the University of Iowa and this is my first year on the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. In high school I was always a part of a bunch of great teams, whether it was tennis or cross country, but all of the sports I played were more individually focused, in that the success of the team was ultimately determined by a bunch of people competing independently. However, ever since I joined the Ultimate team here at Iowa I’ve had a fantastic time playing a sport where I actually get to work with others on a really closely-knit team. Getting to find these new teammates who also happen to be cool and inspirational people has been wonderful, and it has added a lot to my college experience.
Outside of Saucy Nancy I am studying Biology (on the Neurobiology Track), Spanish and I’m hoping to get a certificate in Clinical and Translational Science. I work in a neurobiology laboratory, and for my project I look at how a specific type of brain cell reacts to stroke and what molecules prevent these cells from dying. In terms of extracurricular activities, I love being a part of the Honors Peer Advisors, the ICRU Ambassadors, the Latham Science Engagement Initiative, the ImmUNITY Campaign, the IC Red Week Planning Board and the Human Rights Student Collective. I also spend a lot of time as a volunteer and mentor at the Burn Unit, and I volunteer with the Mobile Clinic too.
Currently at Iowa I’m making enough money to cover tuition, books, rent and food through a couple scholarships and a fellowship I get to do research. However, playing Ultimate costs a fair amount of money (traveling, team dues, uniforms, ect.), and money can get a little tight at times. I love playing frisbee, but even more than that I love being around my fantastic teammates, who honestly inspire me every day. To keep playing on this incredible team, getting sponsored would be incredibly helpful to me, and any contribution would be very appreciated!
